Unchain My Heart - Shirley Johnson

Unchain My Heart,
baby, let me be (let me be, let me be)
Oh you don"t care
Baby Let me, set me free (set me free, set me free)
Unchain My Heart, baby let me be (baby let me be)
Unchain My Heart (Unchain My Heart)
you don"t care about me
Every time I call you on the phone
Some body tells me that you're not at home
Unchain My Heart, set me free , now baby(Unchain My Heart)
Unchain My Heart, baby let me go
Unchain My Heart (Unchain My Heart)
you don"t love me no more
Can't you me sowed up like a mellow case
Can't you let my love go to waste
Unchain My Heart, set me free
I"m under your spell
Like a man in a trance
when but you do't aware
That I don"t stand a chance
Unchain My Heart, let me go my way
Unchain My Heart,
Oh you don't love me no more
Can you love of misery
When you don"t give about the beans for me
Unchain My Heart, set me free, Now baby
    - instrumental break -
Can't you under your spell
Just like a man in a trance,
But you"re no doubt aware
That I don"t stand a chance
Unchain My Heart, let me go my way
Unchain My Heart,
you don't know love me no way
Why leave me to a life of misery
you don"t care about the beans for me
Unchain My Heart, please set me free, my baby
Oh, set me free
Oh, woman why don"t you do that for me
You don"t care, won"t you let me go
That you don"t love me no more
Like a man in a trance
Let me go, I"m under your spell
Like a man in a trance
And you"re no doubt aware
That I don"t stand a chance no
Oh, you don"t care, please set me free

Shirley Johnson has a voice sometimes reminiscent of E.C. Scott, sometimes of Shirley Brown or Jeannie Cheatham. To say she's in possession of some serious pipes qualifies as a major understatement. Her background in gospel (she still sings with her own gospel group) and that formidable vocal prowess are heard to superb effect on this stellar session.

At 53, she's no novice to the blues, having recorded on a few Delmark comps and put in serious club time. She cut a few 45s way back ago and has opened for ZZ Hill, Aretha Franklin and other major players over the years. Still, you can be sure she saved some mojo for this debut disc.

Her version of the Albert King classic "As the Years Go Passing By" (with wonderful guitar work from Johnny B. Moore) is stunning. When she bites into "Your Turn to Cry" (with Robert Ward on guitar), the effect is equally impressive. John Primer (check out "Somebody Have Mercy"), Maurice Jon Vaughn (especially on the Lieber & Stoller chestnut "Saved") and Rockin' Johnny make appearances on guitar throughout, which certainly helps propel Johnson. This is no charity ball, though. one suspects the heavyweight crew was not brought in as the hired guns. Rather, they were probably standing in line for the opportunity to record with this swizzling singer. Her takes on Hendrix's "Little Wing" is surprisingly sweet and her own "Missed the Best Chance" is a gorgeous piece of balladry. Fourteen tunes with nary a clinker in the bunch, this is first-class straight ahead Chicago and wholly impressive.
