Since emigrating to America in 1981,
he worked as a carpenter and a gardener to
make a living for five years.
But after the first five years,
he worked exclusively as a painter.
1981년 미국으로 건너간 이후,
처음 5년간은 먹고 살기 위해
간간이 목수나 정원사로 일을 했으나,
그 이후부터는 '단 한 끼' 도
그림 외에는 다른 것으로
삶을 해결하지 않았다고 한다.
He painted for 10 years,
and during this time did nothing else.
Once he started painting,
he would work nonstop for 10 days at a stretch.
10년 동안 그림 그린 것 외에는
다른 추억이 없고,
한 번 작업을 하게 되면
10여일씩 작업장을 나오지 않기 일쑤였다.
He didn't drink or smoke so that
he could paint with a clear conscious.
He likened his painting style to
standing on the edge of a cliff, he said.
또, 후회 없는 그림 그리기를 위해
술도 담배도 하지 않고,
오직 그리기 위해, 그림을 위해,
스스로를 절벽 끝에 몰아세우고
극한의 상황으로 몰입하였다고 한다.
