'67년 이후 4회에 걸쳐 그래미상을 수상한 그는 수많은 히트 앨범을 발표했지만, 80년대에 접어 들면서 정신질환으로 요양 생활을 하기도 했다. 근육질 체격, 까무잡잡한 피부빛, 거친 윤곽의 용모로 중년여성 팬들을 사로잡았었다.
